This is not always true because PoP doesn’t portray anything about the intensity or the duration of the precipitation. HOW MUCH IS LITERALLY A ‘BOATLOAD OF RAIN’? Does 100% chance of precipitation mean it will rain all day?Ī common misconception about PoP forecasts is that a 100% chance of rain means it will rain heavily all day long. There is forecaster confidence incorporated into PoP, so if the chance of rain is greater than 50%, the meteorologist who prepared that forecast is more confident than not that it will rain, and vice versa. So if the FOX Weather app is predicting a 20% chance of rain, the key takeaway is that there’s a 20% chance rain will fall at any point in the area the forecast is covering, and there’s an 80% chance it will remain dry in that forecast area. The NWS said PoP simply describes the probability that any point in a given forecast area will receive at least 0.01 inches of precipitation during the time period in question. The official terminology used by the National Weather Service for the chance of rain is the "probability of precipitation," or "PoP" for short. An isolated thunderstorm is seen dumping rainfall on one location while surrounding areas are dry.
